Injured female police officer regains consciousness

The police officer who was left severely injured when an attacker beat her about the head with an iron bar has regained consciousness.

The 54-year-old female officer was attacked by the man in the early hours of Monday morning whilst on duty inside Lisburn Police Station. She suffered severe head injuries and was left in a critical condition in hospital.

However, police today confirmed she was now awake and speaking to her family. She is also able to take small amounts of food and water.

Her attacker has since been committed to secure accommodation under the Mental Health Order. The 30-year-old man, who is believed to be from the Republic of Ireland, gained access to a private part of Lisburn police station where the assault took place.

A male colleague also suffered head injuries during the incident. He was later discharged from hospital.
