Police patrol attacked by 200 strong mob

A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a gang of around 200 people attacked a police patrol in west Belfast last night.

The incident occurred when a police patrol went into Falls Park to recover a stolen car which had been abandoned there.

As the fleet of armoured police vehicles entered the park a large crowd converged on the patrol, throwing bricks and bottles.

It is understood that an officer sustained a serious cut to the face after being hit with a bottle.

Condemning the incident, SDLP west Belfast councillor and policing spokesperson, Alex Attwood described the attack as "deplorable".
