Queen's Appoints New Chancellor

Queen's University has appointed a new Chancellor.

Thomas J Moran, a native New Yorker with ancestral roots in Fermanagh and Cavan, is listed as one of the top 100 Irish-American business people in the USA. He has been President and Chief Executive Officer of the Mutual of America Life Insurance Company since October 1994, the first person to have been appointed President from within the Company.

He is also Chairman of Concern Worldwide (US), Inc., an international humanitarian relief organisation that operates in 30 of the poorest countries of the world.

Mr Moran said: "It is a great honour to accept the role of Chancellor of this fine institution. Queen's is known around the world as an innovative, dynamic and exceptional University that helps change lives for the better. I hope, during my time as Chancellor, that I can make a positive contribution to the University's continued success and to increase further its global impact on society."

Mr Moran will serve as the University's new Chancellor, for a period of five years, with effect from 1 May 2015.

Queen's University in Belfast has appointed a new Vice-Chancellor. Professor Ian Greer, who was born and educated in Scotland, is currently Vice President of The University of Manchester. Professor Greer's appointment was approved at a meeting of Senate, the University's Governing Body.

Student security campaign launched by police
Police today encouraged students to ‘lock up before they leave’ as part of a new ‘It’s Good 2 B Secure’ campaign. As most students start or return to school this week, a specially produced film, aimed at raising awareness about securing property, will be shown to all students as they start the new semester.

Disappointment Over Delay To New Medical School In L'Derry
Sinn Fein MP Elisha McCallion has described the announcement that the new medical school in L'Derry will not open next year as "hugely disappointing". It comes a month after it was revealed the development of the campus would be put on hold due to there being no minister in place at the Department of Health to sign off the project.
