Two people arrested in connection with Omagh bombing

Police have arrested two people today for questioning in connection with the Omagh bombing.

The man and woman were detained in the Jonesborough area of Co Armagh and it is understood that they are to be questioned in connection with a number of terrorist related offences.

Around 200 police officers and Army personnel were involved in the arrest operation.

Meanwhile, the solicitors representing the families of Omagh bomb victims have met Irish Government officials in Dublin today to discuss their legal bid against five men whom they believe were involved in the bombing.

The victims' representatives were expected to ask the Republic's Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell to allow Garda experts to testify in a civil action being taken by the relatives.

To date only one person has been sentenced in connection with the Real IRA bombing which killed 29 people in August 1998. In January 2002, Colm Murphy was jailed for 14 years in connection with charges relating to plotting the bomb attack.

Last month, the Special Criminal Court in Dublin sentenced the alleged leader of the Real IRA Michael McKevitt to 20 years in prison for directing terrorism in the period after the Omagh atrocity.
