VE Day To Be Remembered At Belfast City Hall

A beacon is to be lit in the grounds of Belfast City Hall today, 8 May, to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

In Belfast, World War ll veteran Marelle Murphy will say a few words of reflection before the beacon is lit at 9.32pm.

The lighting of the beacon will mark the beginning of a weekend of national commemoration across the UK which will move from remembrance to celebration and thanksgiving.

The Belfast event is being organised in association with the Royal British Legion and the beacon will remain lit for one hour. No tickets are required for admission to this short outdoor commemoration.

Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

A man has been convicted for claiming benefits he was not entitled to.

Aidan Allen of Newington Avenue, Belfast, claimed Incapacity Benefit, Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £32,093 while failing to declare employment.

He was given a 15-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money he wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Council Launches Community Festivals Fund

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has launched its £57,000 Community Festivals Fund to help local groups deliver community focused festivals and events in the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area.

The Community Festivals Fund is jointly financed by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) to recognise the role that festivals can play in increasing social cohesion, economic regeneration and strengthening community relations.

Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council's Leisure & Community Development Committee, Alderman Paul Porter, said: "Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council's Community Festivals Fund is of great of benefit to local community organisations and residents.

"It supports events that promote the active participation of residents in community life contributing towards the community and economic resilience of the towns, villages and city of Lisburn & Castlereagh.

"The grants scheme aims to assist constituted groups working within the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council area to organise their own locally-based arts and cultural festivals that sustain and develop our rich culture and strong communities. I strongly encourage community groups to apply."

Phase 1 Of Connswater Community Greenway Begins
Belfast City Council has confirmed work has started at Victorian and Orangefield Parks. The work, which got underway yesterday, is part of the first phase of the Connswater Community Greenway scheme. BSG Civil Engineering Ltd, who are delivering the works, will be on site in both parks, as construction begins on the £35m project.
