Bombardier To Axe 280 Jobs In Belfast
Aircraft manufacturer Bombardier has announced it is to axe 280 jobs in Belfast.
The firm made the announcement on its website on Thursday.
Éric Martel, President, Bombardier Business Aircraft, said: "Approximately 1,750 employees – up to 1,000 in the Montréal region, up to 480 in Toronto and up to 280 in Belfast – will be progressively impacted at various stages of the Global 5000 and Global 6000 production cycle. Reductions will begin in June 2015 and continue progressively through the first quarter of 2016. Bombardier will communicate with affected employees over the coming months and work to mitigate the impact as much as possible.
"We have seen an industry-wide softness in demand recently in certain international markets and are taking steps to adjust our production accordingly. We fully understand the impact this will have on our affected employees and their families and we will do everything possible to support them."
Alliance East Belfast MLA, Judith Cochrane MLA said: "My first thoughts are with the staff members who will be losing their jobs. This will undoubtedly be a difficult and stressful time for them and their families.
"The loss of so many jobs will have an impact on the local economy and a knock on effect for secondary companies.
"Bombardier remain one of our most prominent employers and play a vital role in the Northern Ireland economy. They have given their commitment to their Northern Ireland operations and I will be seeking a meeting with their local management to see what politicians and the Assembly can do to provide further support to them."

Thousands of Bombardier employees in Northern Ireland face uncertainty as the Canadian company has announced 5,000 job cuts globally today, Thursday 08 November. The aerospace and transportation manufacturer is set to review its Belfast operations but has not confirmed where the cuts will be made.

400 Jobs To Go At Bombardier
Almost 400 jobs are being axed by Bombardier Aerospace in Belfast, it has been announced. The move follows an announcement in July by the company that it would begin an organisational restructure that would see the loss of about 1,800 positions. Today Bombardier said up to 90 Bombardier employees are at risk of redundancy.
