Tall Ships Event Praised As 'Hugely Successful'

The Tall Ships festival has been hailed as "hugely successful" by the PSNI as the event draws to a close.

Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw said he was "pleased" at the public's co-operation during the event, which attracted over half a million visitors. Fifty vessels from around the world were docked in the city during the four days.

The Belfast District Commander said: "We are extremely pleased at the public's co-operation over the four days. Motorists, although at times delayed on the roads, were largely heeding our advice. The traffic management systems worked effectively.

"We acknowledge at times there was congestion on some roads but I think the public will appreciate that with any major public event, traffic disruption is inevitable.

"I would like to thank everyone who attended the event for their patience during what was a busy policing operation. Our main aim was to keep people safe and I am happy we have achieved that.

"An event of this size can only be delivered through effective partnership and I would like to thank all our partners who delivered this event and who made it such a success."

Alliance Party MLA Chris Lyttle said: "I was among the thousands of visitors enjoying the festival over the past few days and it was fantastic to see people from all over the world enjoy all that a new Belfast has to offer.

"This event has projected a positive image of Belfast, signalling it as a welcoming city for everyone and putting it on the world events map."

Today, 6 July, the ships will embark on the opening stage of the race to Ålesund in Norway.
