New Inquests To Be Held Into Deaths Of IRA Men And A Civilian

New inquests will be held into the deaths of eight IRA men and a civilian in Loughgall, Co Armagh, in 1987.

SAS soldiers killed the IRA men in May and it is seen to be one of the most controversial cases of the Troubles.

The Advocate General for Northern Ireland, Jeremy Wright QC, said: "Following careful consideration of a huge amount of material I have come to the decision that new inquests into the Loughgall deaths are justified. The new inquests will establish who has died, and how, when and where the death occurred. The Coroners Service for Northern Ireland will now take this forward."

The Advocate General has informed the families, the Coroner and the Attorney General for Northern Ireland of his decision.

The matter will now pass to the Coroners Service for Northern Ireland to take forward.

Sinn Féin MLA Bronywn McGahan said: "This is the latest development in the long campaign by the families of those killed to establish the truth of what happened.

"The families have a right to know how their loved ones died and if their deaths could have been prevented.

"I pay tribute to the families of those killed for the manner in which they have conducted this long campaign despite British government efforts to frustrate them."
