Shots Fired At Police Car In West Belfast

Up to eight shots have been fired at a police car in west Belfast.

The attack happened in the Rosnareen Avenue area at around 6.50pm on Thursday.

Police are treating the incident as attempted murder.

Several rounds hit the passenger side of the car however none of the two officers were injured.

Belfast Commander Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw said: "This was a mindless and reckless attempt to kill police officers who were carrying out routine duties as part of an investigation into recent serious crime in the area.

"Thankfully it failed. The two officers were badly shaken but not physically injured. Detectives have begun an investigation into this attempted murder and I would appeal to anyone in the community with information to contact police on 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey said: "This attack happened in the early evening in a busy area and could have killed or seriously injured anyone in the area at the time.

"Thankfully no one was injured but it was a frightening experience for people in the area.

"I spoke to people living nearby following this attack and they are rightly angry at what happened.

"Those responsible have nothing to offer the community, they do not speak for local people and need to end these reckless and futile actions immediately.

"We will not allow them to drag us back to the past."
