Shop Keeper Fined Over Illegal Sale Of Cigarettes
A west Belfast shop keeper has been fined in relation to the illegal sale of cigarettes.
Michael McGovern, trading as McGovern's in Cavendish Street, off the Falls Road, was fined £300 for selling cigarettes other than in pre-packed quantities of 10 or more in their original package. He was fined a further £300 for selling cigarettes to a person under the age of 18 years.
The defendant was also ordered to pay £69 in costs to Belfast City Council, who brought the prosecution.
Woman Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A woman has been convicted for claiming benefits she was not entitled to at Antrim Magistrates' Court.
Amanda Lorimer claimed Housing Benefit totalling £6,160 while failing to declare she was living with her partner. She was given 80 hours community service.
She is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
NI Executive Ministers Slammed Over Decision To Form Working Group
The SDLP has hit out at NI Executive Ministers over its decision to form another working group to address the major flooding issues.
Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly said that beyond the relief funds released by the Environment Minister, the first help that flood victims will get from their Executive will be after 21 January.
She said: "There are 220 good reasons to resolve this now – that is the number of millimetres of rain that fell last month, devastating homeowners, businesses and communities. But it now appears that this Executive is totally incapable of taking action. Every day has been an insult to people devastated by floods.
"On the 5th January Mark H Durkan called for a full emergency meeting of the Executive to spend the £1.3million on meaningful action. What we got instead was a sideshow of faux activity over a week which saw a Ministerial summit without any spending power and now a full Executive meeting to set up a working group."

HMRC Announce Automatic Child Benefit Increase
Millions of families who claim Child Benefit will automatically receive increased payments from 6 April 2024, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed. Families with one child will now receive up to £1,331 a year – an annual increase of £83.20, and up to £881 a year per additional child – an annual increase of £54.60.

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson Carál Ní Chuilín has written to the Chief Executive of the Housing Executive Board seeking clarity on their plans for Tower Blocks in north Belfast. The North Belfast MLA said: "There are 33 Tower blocks across the north, seven of which are in the New Lodge area of North Belfast.

Street Drinkers Pay The Cost
Five people have been fined at Belfast Magistrates Court for drinking alcohol in public. Tyrone McCann, from Richmond Avenue in Newtownabbey, was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £66 after he was detected drinking alcohol at Suffolk Road in west Belfast on January 16.
