Drop In Number Of People Claiming Unemployment Benefits

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland has dropped to 38,700, a decrease of 500 over the month.

New figures released for the period September to November 2015 show that the Northern Ireland Labour Force Survey unemployment rate was 5.9%, a drop of 0.1% over the quarter.

There has also been a fall of 11,000 in the unemployment claimant figures over the last 12 months.

Enterprise Minister Jonathan Bell said: "The figures published today contain positive messages across a range of key labour market indicators. In particular, following reductions in unemployment over the medium term, I welcome the evidence of an increase in the proportion of people in work. While there is some indication of a reduction in economic inactivity, it remains to be seen whether this will continue in future.

"At 5.9%, the Northern Ireland unemployment rate continues to compare very favourably to the October 2015 rates for the European Union (9.3%) and the Republic of Ireland (8.9%)."
