Campaign Launched To Ban Snares In NI
The League Against Cruel Sports has launched a campaign to ban snares in Northern Ireland.
The Alliance Party is supporting the new campaign which would see a prohibition of the devices, which trap an estimated 1.7 million animals each year.
Chris Lyttle MLA said: "Last year, Belfast City Council backed an Alliance motion calling for the selling of snares for capturing or killing animals to be made illegal. This is in addition to around three-quarters of people in Northern Ireland backing a ban. That sends out a clear message that urgent action is needed to tackle animal cruelty.
"That's why Alliance pledged to introduce such a ban in our manifesto. We remain committed to this issue and it is one we will continue to work on until such horrifying cruelty is completely eliminated. A total ban on snares is the only humane option available in this matter."
Footbridge In Belfast Scoops Prestigious Award
A footbridge in Belfast, developed by Graham Construction, has scooped an Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Northern Ireland Infrastructure award.
The Lagan Weir Footbridge was officially opened in 2015.
The Infrastructure award category aims to highlight the excellent achievement by a project or programme of infrastructure works. Infrastructure works include any projects that deliver essential facilities, services or organisational structures.
The new 120m-long bridge connects Belfast City Centre to the Titanic Quarter.
Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A man has been convicted for claiming benefits he was not entitled to at Belfast Magistrates' Court.
Jason Yeo claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £3,085 while failing to declare employment. He was fined £600.
He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department for Communities.

Minister confirms NI smoking ban
Northern Ireland is to get a smoking ban in all workplaces and enclosed spaces, the Government has announced today. Health Minister Shawn Woodward said the decision was made following extensive consultation on the issue but that it would be April 2007 before any new legislation comes into effect in the province.

NI Abortion Amendment Fails
A proposed amendment which would ban abortions in private clinics has failed in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The proposal, which was put forward by the DUP and SDLP, was lost after 40 politicians voted against it. Sinn Fein, Alliance and the Green Party managed to block the move.
