Police Did Not Fail To Help Man Over Fears Family Member Was Contemplating Suicide
Police did not fail to come to the aid of a man who asked for help over fears a family member was contemplating suicide, according to the Police Ombudsman.
The man lodged a complaint that the PSNI did not send officers to help when he reported that a relative was suffering a mental health crisis and had cuts to the neck.
A Police Ombudsman investigator obtained a copy of a non-emergency phone call made by the complainant in the early hours of the morning last November.
During the call, which was taken by a police call handler, he asked police to detain the person under mental health legislation to help prevent any further self-harm.
The call was referred to an officer who called back 25 minutes later and established the person was at home, being looked after and in no immediate danger.
He then explained that in the circumstances police could not remove the person from their own home, unless there was a risk to the safety of the person or others, or a possible breach of the peace.
The officer advised the man to call the out of hours doctor, and to call back if the situation changed.

The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Missing Man Found 'Safe And Well'
Missing man Declan Mawhinney has been found safe and well, according to the police. Mr Mawhinney, 46, went missing from Letterkenny on Saturday at approximately 11.40pm. A missing person appeal was launched by the police and his family. He was located in Letterkenny on Tuesday. Police thank the public for their assistance.

A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.
