Cyclist Dies In Co Down Road Collision

A cyclist has died in a road collision in Holywood, Co Down.

The incident happened at about 6:30am on Tuesday, 19 July, near the Holywood section of the road.

The man, aged in his 60s, was heading towards the Bangor direction with another cyclist along the A2.

The other cyclist, aged in his 30s, sustained minor injuries.

The A2 road has been reopened.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne said: "I am shocked and saddened that a man has lost his life in a terrible accident on the A2 Dual Carriageway. This is a very busy section of road and with upwards of 40,000 vehicle movements per day on this road it is one of the busiest roads in Northern Ireland.

"It is devastating that yet another life has been lost on this road, sadly we have seen a number of fatalities on this road in recent years.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and friends at this tragic time. This serves as another reminder of the very real dangers along this busy road and I believe we must see investment along this route to improve road safety along this main arterial route."
