Loyalist Shot Dead In North Belfast

A prominent loyalist has been shot dead in north Belfast.

He has been named locally as John Boreland, who was also a member of the UDA.

The shooting occurred in the Sunningdale Gardens area just before 10pm on Sunday, 07 August.

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly condemned the attack.

He said: "I call on anyone with information on this shooting to bring it forward to the police so those responsible can be caught and taken off the streets. The people behind this attack want to plunge us back to the past. They must not be allowed to succeed.

"I am calling on local political leaders and people with influence in the community and civic society to do all in their power to prevent any further attacks or any escalation of what appears to be internal loyalist feuding."

Alliance Deputy Leader Naomi Long said: "Murder is always wrong and there can never be any excuse for people bringing guns onto the streets. Yet another family will now have to bear the grief of a life lost and yet another community will be living in fear.

"That this murder took place in a residential street, placing the whole community at risk, further highlights the recklessness of those involved and the need for them to be taken off the streets.

"I would appeal to anyone with information on this attack to bring it to the police immediately."
