Pipe Bomb Found In North Belfast

A pipe bomb has been found during a security alert in north Belfast.

The device was discovered in the North Queen Street area this morning, 09 August.

A controlled explosion was carried out and the "viable device" has been taken for further examination.

Residents had to be evacuated from their homes during the alert.

Roads have now reopened.

Detective Inspector Mary White said: "This incident has caused massive inconvenience, disruption and upset for the local community of north Belfast and I would like to thank the members of the public for their patience and cooperation during the operation."

Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee condemned those responsible.

He said: "People have been moved from their homes for their own safety and I have been working with Belfast City Council to get the local community centre opened for families requiring shelter.

"The people responsible for this latest disruption offer the community nothing but hardship and misery and they should end this meaningless and futile activity immediately."
