Investigation Launched Following Racist Attack In Belfast

Police have launched an investigation after a man was assaulted in Belfast city centre which the PSNI are treating as a racially motivated hate crime.

The attack, on a foreign national, occurred in the Bedford Street area between 3.40am and 4am on Sunday, 01 January.

The man was taken to hospital, however his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The attacker is described as being aged in his early 30s, around 5ft 11inches tall and of slim build.

He was wearing dark clothing and police believed he was armed with a "sharp object".

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Man shot in west Belfast
A man has been wounded in a gun attack at a house in west Belfast. A police spokesperson said that a caller to the house in Hawthorn Street had produced a gun and shot the man in the side. An ambulance was called to the scene, however the man was not taken to hospital. His injuries have been described as minor.

PSNI Appeal After Assault At Lagan Valley Hospital
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information over an incident at Lagan Valley Hospital in Lisburn in February. Police believed the attack involved up to five people on the morning of Tuesday, 27 February. Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the hospital's A&E department and observed anything on the morning in question.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

Man questioned about 1988 murder
A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.
