Sinn Féin Will Not Be Re-Nominating A New Deputy First Minister - Adams
Sinn Féin has confirmed it will not be re-nominating a new deputy First Minister and said there must be an election immediately.
Martin McGuinness resigned from the post on Monday, 09 January, over the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scandal which is to cost the public purse over £400million.
However, leader Gerry Adams said the party is always "open to discussions" and is prepared to talk to the DUP.
Mr Adams said: "Following a series of meetings with the Irish and British governments, we don't yet see any basis for credible negotiations this side of an election.
"The issues at stake are clear – accountability in respect of the RHI scandal and allegations of corruption. There are also major issues, itemised by Martin McGuinness in his letter of resignation, surrounding the functioning of the institutions, parity of esteem, equality for citizens of all backgrounds and respect for the functioning of partnership government.
"As co-equal guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement, the Irish and British governments have a responsibility to defend and implement the Agreement.
"Under the terms of that Agreement, they both have responsibility for implementing equality within their respective jurisdictions. They have singularly failed to do that and they have also refused to implement measures already agreed."
