First Results Announced In Assembly Elections

Sinn Féin have taken an early lead in the results of the 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly elections, winning 15 seats to the DUP's 9.

The Sinn Féin leader Michelle O'Neill and Alliance leader Noami Long have both won seats, but SDLP deputy leader Alex Attwood has been eliminated.

At the time of writing 32 of the available 90 seats have been won, with 1st preference counting completed in all constituencies.

From the current results, DUP have secured 28.1% of the vote, down 1.1%; Sinn Féin 27.9%, up 3.9%; UUP 12.9%, up 0.3%; SDLP 11.9%, down 0.1% and Alliance 9.1%, up 2.1%.

SF Sectarianism Strategy 'Little More Than A Photo-Call'
A Sinn Féin strategy to tackle sectarianism has been described as "little more than a photo-call" by DUP East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell. Commenting, Mr Campbell said: "Sinn Fein's anti-sectarianism strategy is a worthwhile concept. Of course all sectarianism should be opposed and condemned.

Sinn Fein's Jim McVeigh To Stand Down As Belfast Councillor
Sinn Fein's Jim McVeigh has confirmed he is stepping down as a Councillor. The leader of the Sinn Fein group on the Belfast City Council announced that he will officially stand down in February. However, he will continue to work as a Sinn Fein and trade union activist.
