SIPTU Raises Concerns Over Future Of Tara Mines
SIPTU have called for meeting with the Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources, Sean Kyne, over the long-term future of the New Boliden Tara Mines in County Meath.
SIPTU Organiser, John Regan, said: "Following a request from SIPTU members employed at Tara Mines, I wrote to Minister Kyne, to request a meeting to discuss the likely impact on the lives of workers, and the local economy, if the current plan to extend the Tailings Pond at the facility is not accepted.
"The planned extension was the subject of an oral hearing by An Bord Pleanala last month. The decision of An Bord Pleanala regarding the development is currently awaited."
He added: "The importance of this proposed unit to the operation of Tara Mines cannot be underestimated. The life of the mine's operating plan is until 2023, a successful extension to the Tailings will extend its operation well beyond that date. Such an extension of the operation of the mine would be very economically beneficial to communities throughout the North Meath area and beyond.
"It is hoped that the Minister will be available to meet a SIPTU delegation to discuss the future of the mine at the earliest opportunity."
