Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A man has been convicted for claiming benefits he was not entitled to at Antrim Crown Court.
David French claimed Income Support and Jobseeker’s Allowance totalling £32,000 while failing to declare an occupational pension. He was given a nine month prison sentence suspended for five years.
The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.
He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
Work Starts On Road Resurfacing Project In Antrim
Construction work on a road resurfacing project has started in Antrim.
A total of £290,000 has been invested in the scheme on Oriel Road and the work also includes the upgrading of street lighting.
The resurfacing up to the junction with Steeple Road will improve the strength and surface quality of the road, while the upgrade of the street lighting to an energy efficient LED system will enhance the quality of lighting. In addition, as part of road improvement works in the town, the existing zebra crossing at the Chapel Corner roundabout will be upgraded to a puffin crossing.
All works are expected to be completed by 11 August 2017.
Motorists are being urged to expect delays during the works and to allow additional time for journeys.
Education Providers Under Immense Pressure - SDLP
SDLP Education Spokesperson Colin McGrath has said that formal and non-formal education providers are being placed under immense pressure to deliver more with less.
He has called on parties to commit to restoring power sharing as crisis in school budgets becomes critical.
He said: "Education providers have been warning about the financial crisis in our schools for some time now. Many schools have been forced to cut subjects and after school provision in an effort to balance their books. The end result is that the education our children receive suffers. That cannot continue.
"A number of primary school principals are now making their concerns very clear. But the issue extends to nursery and post-primary provision. We are facing into a massive budgetary emergency in our education estate and we’re doing so with no government in place to address it."

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.
