SDLP Hits Out At DUP And Sinn Fein

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA hit out at the DUP and Sinn Fein accusing them of what could be “complete and utter failure” to govern.

He said: "Here we are again, another warning from the Secretary of State that if the political deadlock isn't broken, then he will have to step in and set a budget. If we arrive at that point, we will have arrived at the unforgivable point of complete and utter failure on behalf of the DUP and Sinn Fein.

"Let me be very clear, the SDLP rejects entirely any return to British direct rule.

"If the constant mantras of Sinn Fein and the DUP about their commitment to power sharing are to have any meaning at all, then they must prove their opposition to a return to direct rule by reaching an agreement to restore power-sharing.

"The warning words from Mr Brokenshire today should serve as a wake up call to both parties. If there is political will to return to the Assembly and to deliver real equality, including economic equality, then now is the time to do it. We are well past the time of giving them some breathing space.

"After 10 years of government together where neither party delivered on economic rights or language rights, now is the opportunity for Sinn Fein and the DUP to prove if they are either up for the job or they are not."

Violence Is Never an Answer - Alliance

Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson has said violence is never an answer, as hundreds of people were injured in clashes in the Catalan region.

He said: "I am extremely concerned about the reaction of the Spanish Authorities, not just today, but in the run up to what has become a highly volatile situation.

"In Northern Ireland we are far too aware of how violent behaviour can quickly escalate and the dire repercussions from this for the entire community.

"Rather than continuing down this path, any tension should be resolved through dialogue and the courts - and sooner, rather than later before any more people are injured."

UUP Pays Tribute To Governor Of Maghaberry

Ulster Unionist Justice Spokesperson Doug Beattie MC MLA, has paid tribute to Stephen Davis, the Governor of HMP Maghaberry, who has passed away.

He said: "It goes without saying that many people never see the work that our prison service do. The dedication, commitment and professionalism of staff is at times taken for granted, whilst they often operate under the most difficult of circumstances. but the whole of society benefits from their work.

"As the Governor of HMP Maghaberry Steve Davis was dedicated to the profession he had given his life too. He loved his job dearly, was extremely proud of the officers who worked with him and he was protective of how society viewed their work and their contribution to society.

"With the loss of Steve the prison service has lost a hugely influential figure who will be hard to replace in the short term. At this difficult time my thoughts are with his friends and colleagues but even more so his wife Gill and young son Patrick. May time give them peace and the lasting memory of an exceptional man and servant of Northern Ireland."
