DUP And Sinn Fein Clash On 'Britishness'

DUP leader Arlene Foster and Sinn Fein Northern leader Michelle O'Neill have clashed over NI's 'Britishness'.

During a Conservative conference at the Great Hall in Manchester, Mrs O'Neill was asked if Sinn Fein wanted legislation to make NI look less British and she replied: "The north isn't British."

Mrs Foster then said: "I don't want this to turn into a row but Northern Ireland is British".

However, both leaders said an agreement to restore a power-sharing government in NI was possible.

Mrs Foster said there had been "solid progress" but "differences do remain".

Mrs O'Neill also said that Sinn Fein would not be "shoe-horned" into a deal.

NI Secretary of State James Brokenshire, who also attended the event, warned that if a deal was not made he would legislate for a budget with Westminster.

The NI power-sharing executive collapsed in January this year.
