Call For More Support For ME Patients

More support is needed for patients afflicted with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), according to Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew.

She was speaking after a public discussion in Westminster on the treatment options for patients and the need for enhanced public awareness of the illness.

ME is a long-term (chronic), fluctuating, neurological condition that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. It affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK, and around 17 million people worldwide.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP said: "Today was an important opportunity to hear the concerns of those suffering from ME and to better understand how their experiences can lead to improved medical support.

"It is clear that there is not enough information or public discussion on this issue, particularly as welfare cuts are further deepening hardship for carers and the disabled.

"The British Government must end its assault on patients, and put the necessary support in place to give patients and carers the support they deserve."
