Omagh Security Alert Was Caused By Viable Pipe Bomb

Police have confirmed that a security alert which delayed a wreath-laying ceremony in Omagh on Sunday, 12 November, was caused by a viable pipe bomb type device.

PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton blamed dissident republicans.

The device was found in the Drumanagh Avenue area and caused the Remembrance Day Service to be postponed.

Mr Hamilton said: "This is the action of a small and callous group of violent people who have nothing to offer our communities other than fear and intimidation.

"It was a sickening and appalling act on a day which should bring people together to remember the sacrifice made by people from all our communities."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Sinn Féin MLA Catherine Kelly said: "Everyone has a right to remember their dead with dignity and respect and those responsible for this security alert have shown complete disregard for all the people of this community."

Alliance West Tyrone representative Stephen Donnelly said: "Those behind this have no regard for the lives of others in the community - people are sick of this sort of behaviour and have voiced their opposition to it in the past. There can be absolutely no justification for it and I would appeal for it to stop.

"My thanks go to the police and security services for their work in keeping local residents safe. If anyone has any information on this incident, I urge them to contact police immediately."
