SDLP Welcomes Peace Funds Announcement
SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has welcomed the commitment from the President of the EU Commission that Peace Funds to Northern Ireland will continue as part of the next European budget in 2020.
A new round of Peace V funding will bring the total EU peace money investment in Northern Ireland close to EUR 2 billion.
Mr Eastwood said: "If anyone was in doubt as to the European Union’s continuing political interest and commitment to Northern Ireland, this morning's announcement by President Juncker gives a clear and welcome answer.
"The European Union are not allowing Brexit to interfere with their long-term commitment to peace in Northern Ireland. In the face of the narrowness and pettiness of the Brexiteers, the EU continues to be generous. The contrast is there for all to see.
"This announcement is yet one more reason why Northern Ireland cannot afford to lose our relationship with the European Union. Peace monies, infrastructural development and access to the biggest trading block on the planet are only a few of the reasons why people in the North wisely voted to remain in the EU."
Work To Start On Widening Scheme For Comber Greenway
Construction work is to start on a widening scheme for the Comber Greenway in Belfast.
The work will widen the existing Greenway between Holywood Arches and East Link Road.
A total of £350,00 is to be invested in the project and the work is to begin on 18 January.
For health and safety reasons each section will need to be closed to the public while the work takes place. However, diversionary routes have been identified and will be signposted in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public.
The first phase should be finished by mid-February with the full scheme expected to be completed by the end of March 2018.
Woman Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A woman has been convicted for claiming benefits she was not entitled to at Belfast Magistrates' Court.
Kristine Kreslina claimed Income Support totalling £3,644 while failing to declare employment. She was given a two year conditional discharge.
She is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.

Peace People Return To Belfast
A veteran of many 'peace' rallies in the 1970s - Mairead Corrigan Maguire - one of the original anti-NI Troubles 'Peace People', has addressed a large Belfast crowd to condemn the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza. She was speaking at the weekend when the City Hall demonstration was held against the Israeli attack on the Gaza area.

A renewed sense of urgency evident on Thursday night as Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Prime Minister Tony Blair met in Dublin to discuss the Northern Ireland peace process. The two premiers pledged to take personal charge of a bid to break the deadlock following the return of the politicians from St Patrick's Day celebrations in Washington next week.
