Work Continues To Improve Sewerage Infrastructure In Co Down
Dawson WAM and NI Water are continuing to undergo work to improve the sewerage infrastructure and key pumping stations in Bangor, Co Down.
NI Water confirmed it is investing £10million in the major capital works programme.
The current phase of the programme involves the replacement of the existing Waste Water pumping station at Castle Park along with the upgrade of sewers in the area. As part of the phase it is necessary to lay a section of new sewer across the Newtownards Road to connect an existing sewer to the new pumping station. The improvement work will reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding and improve water quality in the Clandeboye Stream.
Works will commence at 7am on Saturday, 20 January, with works scheduled to be completed later that evening. Works of this nature involves the use of heavy machinery, however NI Water said it will endeavour to minimise noise as far as possible especially during the night-time hours, and will as far as possible undertake the most disruptive elements of work prior to 11pm.
A temporary lane closure will be put in place on the Bangor bound lane on Belfast Road up to the crossroads with Brunswick Road, Abbey Street and Newtownards Road. Four way temporary traffic signals will be provided at the junction to ensure traffic flows as normal. Vehicular access will be maintained for residents where possible and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Woman Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A woman has been convicted for claiming £40,553 benefits she was not entitled to at Downpatrick Crown Court.
Katrina Spiers claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £40,553 while failing to declare living with a partner. She was given a six month prison sentence suspended for two years.
The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.
Ms Spiers is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
Call For Additional Capacity Within Domiciliary Care System
Additional capacity must be provided within the domiciliary care system, given the vital role that it plays in the health service, Sinn Féin spokesperson for carers, Colm Gildernew has said.
The Fermanagh-South Tyrone MLA also praised the contribution made by carers in relieving pressure on the wider health system.
He said: "Informal carers are playing a vital role in caring for family members at home and avoiding further pressures on emergency departments, and are to be commended.
"More capacity needs to be provided in domiciliary care to support those in need and their families.
"Fundamental to this is improving the conditions for the domiciliary care workers and attracting more into the workforce."
