Protesters Block Markets Area Over Proposed Office Block

A number of people have blocked Stewart Street in Belfast's Markets area in protest over a proposal to build a high rise office block on a derelict site next to Central Station.

Protesters carried 'Sunshine Not Skyscrapers' carried placards as they blocked the road ahead of a legal challenge over the plans.

Campaigners claim that the proposed office block will dominate the skyline and negatively impact their homes.

It is understood that protesters then moved to the High Court as a judicial review of the proposals is due to be heard.

The case, brought by solicitor Pádraig Ó Muirigh – a resident of the Markets area – aims to challenge planning permission granted by Belfast City Council for a £55 million, 14-storey office complex.
