Belfast Giants Add Six New Signings For 2018/19 Season
The Belfast Giants have added six signings to the team for the upcoming 2018/2019 season.
The signings include Team GB gold medalist Colin Shields, Stephen Murphy, Mark Garside, Dustin Johner and Jonathan Ferland.
They will be joined by new arrival Lewis Cook, formerly of the Milton Keynes Lightning.
A testimonial will also take place for netminder Stephen Murphy in recognition of his 10 season career in Belfast.
Colin Shields and Mark Garside will also celebrate their eleventh and ninth years at Belfast Giants this season.
New Five Year Language Strategy Launched In Belfast
Lord Mayor Councillor Nuala McAllister has launched a brand new five-year language strategy in an effort to make Belfast a more inclusive city.
The Belfast City Council has committed to the strategy, in line with the long term Belfast Agenda development plan.
The launch took place yesterday, 14 May, at Belfast City Hall and was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including community, health, social and economic groups.
Councillor McAllister said: "Linguistic diversity is just one of many factors which impact on achieving the aims of the Belfast Agenda, our long term development plan for the city.
"This has four pillars to support inclusive growth – Growing the Economy; Living Here; City Development and Working and Learning. The language strategy is part of that inclusive work - it establishes a transparent set of principles for promoting, protecting and enhancing the linguistic diversity of the city.
"The strategy develops five work strands promoting Irish Language; Ulster-Scots; Sign Language; New Communities Languages and Languages and Communications for disabled people."
The strategy will run until 2023.
Investigation Ongoing Following Pick Axe Assualt In East Belfast
An investigation is ongoing following the assault of man in East Belfast with a pick axe handle on Friday night, 11 May.
The incident happened at around 10.30pm in the London Road area.
The man was reportedly approached by two males, led into an alleyway and beaten by several hooded males.
He was believed to be held to the ground and beaten with a pick axe handle, causing fractures to his arm.
PSNI has appealed for anyone with any information to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Belfast City Council have hosted a special event at City Hall to mark Ulster-Scots Language Week featuring Ulster-Scots music, poetry and storytelling. The event was organised by community development organisation, Small Steps, with support from the Ulster-Scots Agency and in partnership with Belfast City Council.
