Funeral held for Tyrone GAA star

Thousands of mourners have attended the funeral of Tyrone GAA star Cormac McAnallen in his home town of Eglish, near Dungannon today.

At the funeral mass Archbishop Sean Bradey said that the young man had been a hero, and an icon for young men.

The 24-year-old was found dead at his home in bed on Tuesday. A post mortem examination revealed he died from a rare viral infection of the heart.

Captaining minor, under-21 and senior sides in a glittering career, Cormac had led the senior side to victory in the McKenna cup recently and played a key role in the Tyrone defeat of champions Armagh at Croke Park in September last year.

Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte described him as a true gentleman and "born leader".

Galway footballer Padraig Joyce, who played alongside McAnallen in the International Rules Series against Australia for three years, said it was "a very hard blow for people to take".

Thousands of people attended today's Requiem Mass at Saint Patrick's Church in the town.

The service was relayed to the nearby sports hall and the parochial hall.
