Linfield secure 45th league title
Linfield secured their 45th league championship title at the weekend following a 2-1 win over cross city rivals Glentoran at Windsor Park.
David Jeffrey's men needed only a draw to secure the title with Portadown hot on their heels going into the last game of the season.
Despite going a goal down to an Andy Smith penalty after just three minutes when William Murphy gave away a hand ball, the Blues hit back almost immediately with a Davey Larmour header.
Continuous Linfield pressure meant that a second goal was inevitable, and so it proved.
Within ten minutes of the restart Mark Picking was the first to react to a mistake by Glens keeper Elliott Morris, firing home the rebound.
Despite Portadown winning 3-0 against Glenavon, Linfield claimed the Premiership title for the first time since the 2000/2001 season with a three point advantage and having only been beaten once all season.
Consolation for Glentoran, however, as they face Coleraine next month in the Irish Cup Final, a repeat of last year's showpiece.
