Gunshot damage leaves 2,000 homes and businesses without power

Nearly 2,000 homes and businesses were left without electricity over the weekend following gunshot damage to the overhead electricity network in Co Down.

Carnbane, Derrybeg, parts of Newry city and Daisy Hill Hospital were mainly affected by the electricity loss after damage was caused to over a dozen glass insulators.

Commenting on the loss, Angelena Fusco, NIE Customer Relations Manager, said: “Vandalism of this nature causes great inconvenience for the local community. In this incident Daisy Hill Hospital experienced some difficulties with essential equipment which could have placed patients at risk.

"I cannot stress strongly enough the danger these people may create when they maliciously damage or interfere with electricity equipment."

Ms Fusco said that the damage had been reported to police and appealed for anyone who spots incidents of this nature to contact NIE on 08457 643 643.
