Prison Service takes on former police in-court role

The Northern Ireland Prison Service today completed its programme of assuming responsibility for prisoners in all magistrates’ courts in Northern Ireland from the PSNI.

The move will free up additional police officers for front line duties and follows the new process which began in May of this year when the Prison Service took over control of Laganside Magistrates Court followed by Newry, Armagh and Banbridge Courts. It completed the project today by taking over responsibility for prisoners in Lisburn, Craigavon and Dungannon.

Commenting on the move Security Minister Ian Pearson said: “By the Prison Service taking control of prisoners in Magistrate’s Courts, the PSNI now have around 78 officers who can be redeployed to front line duties.

“It is an excellent example of joined up Government demonstrating the efficiencies that can be made when agencies work together to deliver more effective public services.”
