Two die in weekend road accident

Two men have died following a road traffic accident in Co Londonderry over the weekend.

Cathal O'Kane, 21, from Claudy and Mark Anthony Bonner, 27, from Dungiven, died when the car they were travelling in on the Ballyquin Road hit a tree and ended up in a field at around 2.30am on Sunday. There was no other vehicle involved.

A third person travelling in the car with the two men, Mr O'Kane's twin brother, Christopher, survived the accident but is said to be serious but stable condition in Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry.

All three men were returning home from a night out at a Limavady hotel when the accident happened on stretch of road which is a renowned accident blackspot.

Police have appealed for anyone who had stopped at the scene of the accident to render assistance, and who had not yet contacted detectives, to get in touch.

The road, which was closed for a time following the incident, has since re-opened.
