Archbishop urges Catholics to pray for Pope

The Archbishop of Armagh has urged Catholics to pray "fervently" for Pope John Paul II.

Speaking outside Armagh Cathedral, Dr Sean Brady praised the Pontiff and described him as a “great teacher of the church”.

He said: "Any time I met him he was always anxious to inquire about Ireland, and the people of Ireland. He knows our history. He knows how much we suffered for our faith. He may be united ever more closely with Jesus in his suffering and be given all the graces that he needs at this time.”

The Vatican confirmed on Friday that Pope John Paul II had suffered severe heart problems and had been given the last rites.

The 84-year Pontiff who remained conscious, is in a grave condition and Vatican sources said that he was "serene".

It was reported that the Pope had not been taken to hospital but is being treated by a medical team at the Vatican, including his personal doctor, two intensive care doctors, a cardiologist, an ear, nose and throat specialist and two nurses.
