Woman and son escape injury in petrol bomb attack

A woman and her eight-year-old son have escaped injury in a petrol bomb attack at their home in Co Down on Tuesday.

The device was thrown at the front of the house at Ballyminetragh Gardens, Bangor, at around 9pm.

The woman and her child were in the living room when the petrol bomb was thrown at the window. When the window failed to break, however, the device caused smoke damage to the window and outside wall.

Ulster Unionist candidate for North Down, Lady Sylvia Hermon said she had “nothing but contempt” for those responsible.

“I’m horrified by this cowardly attack on a defenceless family in their home and have nothing but contempt for the thugs who did it," Lady Hermon said. "Mercifully, no one was injured but, clearly, this could have been much, much worse."

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old man has been treated in hospital following an attack in Co Antrim early this morning.

Three men are believed to have been involved in the assault which took place at a house in Glenkeen Drive, Greenisland at around 3.30am. A car parked in the driveway of the house was also damaged.

The victim was taken to hospital where he is being treated for injuries to his leg and body.

Anyone with information on either attack is asked to contact police on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
