Canal body find confirmed as missing man

The body of a man found in a car at the bottom of Newry Canal has been confirmed as missing man Gareth O’Connor.

The 24-year-old went missing in May 2003 as he drove south to answer bail conditions in the Irish Republic regarding charges of being a member of the Real IRA.

Detectives believe he was killed by the IRA despite their subsequent denial of involvement.

His car was pulled out of the canal on Saturday, but DNA tests were needed to identify the body.

Mr O’Connor’s submerged blue Volkswagen Golf was discovered close to Victoria Lock near Newry after a two-day operation involving members of the PSNI's underwater search unit.

Shortly before his disappearance, his car was last spotted on closed-circuit television pictures driving through the Co Armagh village of Newtownhamilton.

His family believe mainstream republicans were behind the killing.
