Former NI secretary 'critically ill' in hospital

Former Northern Ireland Secretary of State Mo Mowlam is critically ill in hospital, officials have said.

Ms Mowlam, 55, was admitted to King's College Hospital at the weekend, however hospital officials have refused to say whether it is connected to a previous benign brain tumour. Her condition is described as "critical but stable".

The former Labour MP was in Watford but grew up in Coventry, attending the Coundon Court Comprehensive school, and then studied at the Universities of Durham and Iowa.

She became the MP for Redcar in 1987, becoming opposition spokesperson on Northern Ireland in that year. Since then she held a variety of posts, and became Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1994.

Later in 2000 she announced her intention to retire from Parliament, relinquishing her seat at the 2001 election.
