Teenager remanded in custody in connection with rape

A teenager has been remanded in custody today charged with the rape of a 15-year-old girl in west Belfast ten days ago.

The victim was walking along the Blacks Road on August 6 when she was set upon by two people, one of whom raped her twice. Three friends she was with at the time were also threatened during the incident and forced to watch the girl’s ordeal.

The 16-year-old suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Wednesday and spoke only to confirm his name. He faces 12 charges including assault, armed robbery, false imprisonment and grievous bodily harm.

A police detective told the court that when the charges were put to him, the youth replied: "Not guilty".

The youth was remanded in custody and is due to re-appear before the court by video link before 30 August.

At the weekend, another 16-year-old appeared in court charged with aiding and abetting rape in connection with the attack.
