NIE launch wood pellet heating scheme

Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) has this week launched a new renewable energy initiative offering businesses across the province grant support to install wood pellet heating units.

The scheme, which has been developed by NIE in partnership with Invest NI and Enniskillen wood pellet producer Balcas, will see wood pellet units used as stand alone room heaters or integrated as part of the central heating system.

NIE’s Delta Hamilton said new technologies, such as stoves and boilers which use sustainable fuel, would have a positive impact on the local environment.

“We hope all types of businesses will see the economic and environmental benefits of using this sustainable fuel as part of their energy mix," she said.

“Balcas' 'brites' are a bio fuel pellet made using the residual material from wood processing. Wood fuels have a significant role to play in combating climate change because the CO2 released when the wood is converted to energy has previously been taken out of the atmosphere as the trees were growing.

"Wood fuel is therefore classed as ‘Carbon Neutral Fuel’ and less pollution is produced compared to burning fossil fuels. We are offering businesses grant support for both wood pellet stoves and wood pellet boilers, a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel heating systems.”

NIE said it hopes the new method of heating will become as widely used in Northern Ireland as it has done throughout North America, Canada and Scandinavia.

PSNI Chief Superintendent Michele Larmour is to take up a new post of Assistant Chief Constable at West Midlands Police. Mrs Larmour came within the top performers on the Strategic Command Course which she graduated from on the 13th March 2015. In West Midlands Police, Michele is joining the second largest police Force in England.

Ratepayers To Receive New Rate Bills
Homeowners and businesses throughout the new Belfast District Council area are to receive their rate bill for 2015/16 this week. The bill will show the amount due for the new billing period 2015/16, including any debt that may have been carried forward from previous years, along with any rate relief, where applicable.

Wizz Air To Operate New Route From Airport
Wizz Air has announced it is to operate a new route from Belfast International Airport. Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Arlene Foster said it is a positive development for Northern Ireland. Lord Mayor Of Belfast Begins New Role
The new Lord Mayor of Belfast is to begin his role today. Councillor Arder Carson, the Sinn Fein politician, who represents the Black Mountain district, was elected to Belfast City Council in 2014 and was formerly a councillor in Lisburn. The 54-year-old, from Andersonstown, is taking the theme 'Lord Mayor for communities' throughout his term.

Finance Minister Announces New Annual Rate Statement
A new annual rate statement for all domestic rate payers in Northern Ireland has been introduced by the Finance Minister. Sinn Féin's Arder Carson New Lord Mayor Of Belfast
Sinn Féin's Arder Carson has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Belfast City Council. Mr Carson, who represents the Upper Falls, will take up the post from 1st April, replacing the SDLP's Nicola Mallon. The DUP's Guy Spence has also been elected as the new deputy mayor.

Enniskillen facility to safeguard 200 jobs
A new wood fuel pellet production facility based in Enniskillen looks set to safeguard 200 jobs as well as create a further 20 positions in the foreseeable future. Castlewellan Castle Goes 'Green'
A 19th century castle within Castlewellan Forest Park, in Co Down, is installing a new heating system to be fuelled by locally grown wood chip. Castlewellan Castle is managed by Christian charity, Centre Ministries and is used mainly as a residential conference centre. Built in 1856, the castle has never had a true central heating system.
