Protestors block Springfield Road over parade decision

Around 20 protestors have blocked the Springfield Road in west Belfast on Thursday in protest at the re-routing of an Orange parade in the area.

Local residents and members of the Orange Order blocked the road during rush hour traffic early this morning in protest at the Parades Commission decision to re-route the Whiterock parade from Workman Avenue through the former Mackies factory site this coming Saturday.

Police told those at the peaceful protest to remove themselves from the road which they eventually did several hours later.

Sinn Féin West Belfast Councillor Tom Hartley accused those behind today's protest of trying to heighten tensions in the area.

"The chaos created this morning was designed to heighten tensions in the Springfield Road area," Cllr. Hartley said. "The ongoing tension and stress this imposes upon the nationalist community on the Springfield Road and the stress it imposes on community relations is unacceptable."

Meanwhile, Irish President Mary McAleese has called off a planned visit to the Shankill Road on Thursday.

Ardoyne-born McAleese planned to visit to Edenbrooke Primary School however ongoing loyalist violence in the area means she has now had to rearrange the visit.

A planned visit to the school earlier the year was also postponded after Mrs McAleese said that some children in Northern Ireland were taught to hate Catholics in the same way Nazis taught theirs to despise Jews.

She later said she was "deeply sorry" for the offence her remarks caused.
