Progress being made towards single farm payments

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) has outlined progress towards making single farm payments.

DARD confirmed that "very significant progress" had been made on validating applications for the Single Farm Payment and work would continue with a view to completing the process as quickly as possible.

However, the Department also revealed that, in line with other areas of the UK, it is unlikely to be able to make payments in full when the payment window opens at the start of December.

Agriculture Minister, Jeff Rooker, said: "I know that this will be very disappointing for farmers in Northern Ireland, but I can confirm that the UK is working hard to secure the agreement of the EU Commission to make significant part payments as soon as possible after 1 December.

"I recognise that this is a key issue for farmers and will keep them advised of progress. Meanwhile, the Department will continue to process claims as quickly as it can."

Reform of the Common Agricultural Policy was agreed at the Council of Agriculture Ministers in June 2003 and has taken effect in 2005. The new Single Farm Payment Scheme has replaced previous livestock and arable direct support regimes in Northern Ireland.
