Overnight snow causes traffic disruption

Motorists have once again been warned to take extra care when driving after a significant overnight snowfall.

An estimated five inches of snow fell on high grounds as temperatures plummeted to three degrees below freezing.

All main routes have been reported as passable with extreme care, however the M1 motorway was reduced to a single lane of traffic for a time earlier this morning.

Areas worst affected were Craigavon, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Strabane and some parts of County Tyrone.

A spokesman for the Roads Service today warned that driving conditions could be treacherous as overnight snow had fallen on icy surfaces.

He added that although gritters had been dispatched throughout the night and earlier this morning, that extra time should be allowed for travel.

He said: "I would ask people to allow additional time for journeys and exercise extreme care at all times.

"All routes are passable, albeit with care."

The Met Office has warned that more snowy showers are expected throughout the rest of today.
