Man remanded in custody charged with murder

A man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a woman in north Belfast at the weekend.

Nelson Watson, 59, from Clanmorris Street in the Tiger's Bay area of the city, is accused of the murder of 42-year-old Barbara Taggart, who is understood to have died after a fire in his flat, on Saturday night.

Ms Taggart suffered severe burns during the blaze and died in hospital from her injuries the following day.

The accused appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court wearing police issue overalls and only spoke to confirm that he understood the charge.

A detective revealed that Mr Watson had made no comment when arrested, however he added that he believed that he could connect him to the charge.

Nelson Watson was remanded in police custody until April 26, when he will appear before the court via video-link.
