City Council seeks artists to brighten up Belfast

Belfast City Council has called on artists to brighten up the city's arterial routes.

The artists are being asked get involved in Belfast City Council’s ongoing ‘Renewing The Routes’ urban regeneration programme.

Councillor Bernie Kelly, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Arts Sub-Committee explained that the Council is creating a number of opportunities for artists to get involved in new public and community arts projects on major arterial routes throughout Belfast.

He said: “These projects will be on a variety of scales and budgets: many of the art works required will be permanent, while some sites will need works that are more temporary in nature.

“We want to get local people involved with local artists, designers and developers to shape their environment and apply a strong artistic vision to these urban regeneration projects."

The ‘Renewing The Routes’ urban regeneration programme is aimed to create attractive new public art landmarks along the city's arterial routes and to deliver positive visual impacts for the city and also creative inter-community partnerships.

The programme is geared towards building a shared vision for the development of public spaces across the city by ensuring that creativity, innovation, cohesion and high quality design are reflected in the public art projects.

Artists who are selected will have their details held on file until March 2007 and they will be asked to submit proposals for specific projects as they arise.

Belfast City Council have invited artists who are interested in applying, to submit their CV, contact details, copies of previous work and a short letter of interest or artist’s statement outlining relevant experience of working within the public realm and site-specific work.

For further information and details of the selection criteria please contact the Culture and Arts Unit on (028) 9027 0461, or email cultureandartsadmin@belfastcity.gov.uk.
