Redevelopment of South Tyrone hospital announced

The government has today announced a new proposal for a major redevelopment of the South Tyrone Hospital.

Craigavon Area Hospital Group Trust together with Armagh & Dungannon Health and Social Services (HSS) Trust has submitted proposals for the £53 million redevelopment of the hospital site to the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.

Commenting on the announcement, Health Minister, Paul Goggins said: “These proposals are another significant development in the planned £2.9 billion programme of investment in health and social services which is being delivered by my Department with the support of the Strategic Investment Board."

The Minister continued: “Whilst it is too early to comment on the details of the proposal, I look forward to seeing the plan. This is a major investment over a number of years and in due course, I look forward to seeing further real improvements in health and social services for the people of the Dungannon area and in particular for the increasing numbers in the 65+ age group.”

The Department’s hospital modernisation policy, set out in Developing Better Services (2002), proposed that South Tyrone would be developed as a Local Hospital.

An allocation for redevelopment of South Tyrone Hospital was included in the £2.9 billion investment programme announced for health and social services over the next ten years in the Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland in December 2004.
