Belfast City Hall to celebrate 100th birthday

Belfast City Council have today invited the people of Belfast to attend the city's biggest birthday party to mark the 100th anniversary of the City Hall.

As part of the Celebrate Belfast 2006 programme of events, a special ‘Picnic on the Lawn’ is being held in the grounds of the city hall between 11am and 7pm, to mark the centenary of the opening of the City Hall, 100 years ago.

There will be all sorts of attractions and demonstrations, music, fun and games for all the family.

Inviting the people of Belfast to join in the birthday party, Lord Mayor Pat McCarthy said: “The centenary of City Hall is an ideal opportunity for everyone to celebrate everything that is good about Belfast and to show their pride in their city.

“The City Hall belongs to the people of Belfast, all the people of Belfast, and the centenary events have been designed to show the building off to the people who own it. Thousands of people are visiting our ‘Century Of Memories’ exhibition every week, and thousands more have attended the many events which have been held in the City Hall so far this year. Many people, young and old, have been visiting the City Hall for the first time – and we want many more to take up our invitation to visit their City Hall and see it for themselves.”

Opening with the presentation of a special ‘birthday cake,’ the day’s programme will feature live music by local artists, and entertainment reflecting Belfast’s cultural diversity, with Irish, Ulster Scots, Chinese, Indian, and Spanish representation.

There will be carnival performances, floats and circus acts including Knot Smart’s breathtaking aerial show and an escapologist act, suspended 30 feet above the City Hall lawns.

Children’s entertainment will include face painters, balloon modellers, magic acts, while historical characters from 1906 and street entertainers will be roving amongst the crowds.

The various departments of Belfast City Council will be represented through a sports and fitness area, which will include a climbing wall, and a funfair with recycling theme.

Children from the Council’s summer schemes will be in fancy dress, and Belfast Zoo will have interactive games and promotions for children and young people.

People can either bring their picnic along to the grounds of City Hall or purchase foods from various speciality stalls.

There will also be art stalls with local artists selling paintings and a characturist for those who fancy having a unique portrait done as a memento for the day.

The day’s festivities will be brought to a close with dance demonstrations, featuring contemporary dance by Rebel Phunk and salsa dancing by Salsa Belfast.
