£4.5m Thales expansion package revealed
Belfast-based Thales Air Defence is set to invest £4.5 million in a bid to expand its growth and product portfolio.
The £4.5 million investment will see the establishment of a centre of excellence in missile systems integration, including sophisticated electronics and laser guidance systems. The slew of monies builds on recent successes including the securing of six major contracts totalling over £400 million since 1996.
Thales Air Defence, which currently employs around 600 people in Belfast and at its testing facility in south Down, develops a range of missile systems including the Starstreak air defence system, the most advanced weapon of its type.
Speaking during a visit to the Thales plant at Castlereagh in Belfast, NIO Trade Minister Ian Pearson said: "This investment is another significant endorsement by Thales - a global leader in defence electronics - of Northern Ireland as a international technology centre.
“In today’s intensely competitive marketplace companies such as TADL which are committed to innovation at all levels of their operations are better able to compete and succeed.”
The investment represents a joint Invest NI, Department of Employment and Learning and EU-backed research and technology development programme.
