Police attacked in west Belfast

Police have come under attack by a gang of youths in the New Barnsley Estate area of west Belfast yesterday evening.

Petrol bombs, bricks and stones were among the “heavy missiles” thrown at police during the incident. A number of vehicles were also damaged on the Ballygomartin Road and a barricade was erected which blocked the Mountain Road.

It is understood the youths were all around 13 and 14 years of age, and Police Chief Superintendent Gary White has described this as "worrying".

Calm was restored to the area at around 9.30pm after community representatives intervened.

Four youths who were arrested follwing the incident have been releaased pending reports.
