Duo appear in court over Co Louth attack

Two men accused of viciously attacking a couple in County Louth have appeared in court today.

Elias Boswell, 20, from Auburn Park in Bangor and Patrick Joseph Mongan, 21 from Ardcarn Park in Newry, are accused of attempted murder alongside other charges.

The couple, a woman aged 56 and her 61-year-old husband from Skegness, Lincolnshire, were asleep in their campervan when they were attacked early on Monday.

The woman suffered a fractured skull, and her husband a broken arm. They also sustained cuts to their heads in the 4am attack.

They were attacked on the main Dublin to Belfast road while travelling through Ireland on holiday. It is understood they are in a stable condition.

The two are accused of hijacking, aggravated burglary and stealing cash and belongings while armed with a hatchet and a machete.

Both men made no reply when charged; however a defence lawyer said they both strongly denied the offences.

They were remanded in custody to appear in court next month.
